Following a closed hearing on January 13, , Stephens set a new trial for the penalty phase. Attorneys in the case were not allowed to call witnesses or present evidence during the proceeding.

Although jurors were unable to reach an agreement on the penalty to be imposed for Arias, her murder conviction stood. Parties in the Arias case returned to court for a closed hearing on May 16, , before Stephens. A retrial was originally scheduled for September 8, , but, after being pushed back, jury selection began on September 29, Within hours her address also was published, and social-media trial watchers quickly sniffed out court records that, had Martinez known of them on March 3, might have helped him succeed in getting the resistant juror ejected.

Unbeknownst to Martinez, Juror 17's ex-husband had actually been prosecuted by Martinez in the late s. During pretrial questioning, the woman had revealed that her ex-husband had been convicted of a felony and sent to prison. She did not say that Martinez was involved. Whether she knew remains to be seen.

This is the sentencing phase, not a retrial. Arizona's taxpayers money is just filing their pockets and they see no reason to hurry.. The slower they go, the bigger chance there is in losing more jurors, which in turn will mean Judge Stephens will get to make the final call.

Just like the applet court saying to release the documents of Jodi's secret testimony, she said we would get it today.. She is breaking the law herself and personally, I feel she should face charges too. I'm so embarrassed for her. She appears to be in over her head. Perhaps you have given are too large of a caseload because she can't get through a day's work and she is constantly taking breaks and days off.

She allows witness to be disrespectful to the prosecution, only holds court part-time, allows trivial delays and defense manipulation, and carries on proceedings in secret even after being corrected by higher courts.

She should be removed from office. Judge Stephens has lost control of the courtroom and it seems that this trial could go on another 10 years. When does it stop? It seems to me that they are retrying the case. I thought they were in the phase of determining her punishment not bringing up so called new evidence and retrying the case.

She maybe able to handle Traffic Court but, that's about it. Has no respect for the victim, yeah does she remember the victim "Travis Alexander" and what about Travis Alexander's family?

Stevens, for everything in the legal book allowed This is an outrage that this trial would ever take this long 7 years!! She couldn't even explain to the first jury their full instructions. Now, this jury has been ranked on a chain from the inception Stevens, is responsible for this entire fiasco to the point of disbarment! Stevens, has made a mockery of the US Judicial System. She allows this defense team to file motion after motion after motion with no validity but to waste the courts time and loose the jury!

This is a Retrial and seriously any seasoned or competent Judge would have had this completed in 2 weeks max! What real Judge would not place a "Gag Order" on the defendant from the get go? She has allowed this defendant, to do TV interviews, used the news media, social media, and her outside "Kool-Aide" drinking supporters to use Twitter, sell art work, etc. This is ludicrous! What real Judge would allow the defendant to sit in the court room and snare, laugh, doodle, flip the bird and totally disrespect the State's Prosecutor?

Because it's "her" continued smear campaign against a man who wasn't even dating "her" and refused to take "her" to Cancun Mexico, of which "she" was once on that travel ticket, but was removed after he broke up with "her".

That's why "she" viciously, cruelly, and evilly with premeditation murdered Travis Victor Alexander for. Stephens ruling on this was ALL WRONG, get her off this bench, as she has more then shown her hand to laying directly on the convicted felon,s shoulder and siding with "her" through out this whole court trial She is allowing a convicted murderer and Nurmi to run this retrial.

Allows Nurmi to file motion after motion to cause more delays. They had two weeks over the holiday break to file motions, but Nurmi waits until Monday of this week to file yet again, another motion! Thank God the SC has real judges presiding, and ruled immediately! Nurmi didn't get his way, finally, and is now throwing his fits, and JSS allows it!! All this time the jurors and the Alexander's continue to come to court only to be sent home. No courtesy or concern for them, their lives, or their families.

In the meantime, Nurmi, Wilmott, and the rest of the murderers council continue to charge the state of Az for their time. What have you paid so far, about 3 million??

He was asked his name and Sherry no judge by any means once again calls for a recess so Wormi can coach this fake on how to lie, he answers "Smith" we all know that is a lie so why is Sherry allowing someone knowingly to perjure themselves in her court?

Unable to control the courtroom and the case. She has great difficulty in setting deadlines and worse, when she does and they aren't met, just resets another. She hold "moot court" every day in that she fails to simply rule of objections and move the case forward. Gets drawn into timely sidebars, the likes I've never seen.

She has no control of witness behavior and allows them to testify beyond scope and behave inappropriately in front of juries. Criminal court is NOT where she should work.

Maybe I'll give her one star for turning up to court. Appalling example of a Judge. However, in her case, consistently biased behavior in favor of a convicted murderer and her immoral Defense Team. Let her retire and never to heard from in Courts of Arizona again. In the months this penalty phase, I believe there has only been 20 days testimony.

Jurors show up and are sent home, with maybe a day of testimony if they're lucky. Multiple duplicate motions are continually allowed to be filed by defense. This judge has had numerous "secret" meetings with Jody Arias in her quarters.

That is, when he gets a chance. There are now 3 witnesses he has had no chance to cross. Unfortunately, I can go on and on. She has no control of her courtroom. I do not understand how she is allowed to continue. She is the poorest excuse for a judge. When does the Alexander family get their closure? This trial is a disgrace!!

I cannot believe the people of Arizona have not protested this trial and is allowing the state to waste their money. This judge should be ashamed of herself for what she is allowing this defense to get away with. Judge Stephens I just hope if and when the time comes that you have to make the decision you find it in your heart to never let this defendant out on the streets again!!

Hopefully the jury will do this, if there is anyone left by the time this trial comes to an end. Does Nurmi really rattle you to the point that you continue to cave in to him on a daily basis? And here we sit most every day with a dark courtroom, just as we had this week. And this is after more than a two week break. Are you in charge of this trial or is Jodi Arias in charge of her own trial? It seems that she is calling all the shots behind the scenes.

If so, why does it seem like this trial continues to go backwards instead of moving forward? Remember when you assured us that there would be no more delays? Who the heck were you talking to? And which trial were you talking about? You may have announced that but you have yet to fulfill it. Are you forgetting that she is a convicted murderer? Do you remember the autopsy photos of Travis Alexander? Did they not even cause you to flinch? What about Travis' family? You seem to have blocked them out of your thoughts or concerns.

Shame on you! Locking out both the media and the public? But that a rarity!!!! She says she fears for her life? Who the heck from? She has concocted yet another scenario as to why she killed Travis and it is a set of more lies she is spewing, just like she has from the day she was arrested. And you, the judge that 'should' be in charge of this trial is allowing her to do so.

Bottom line, we have lost faith in your guidance. You have disrupted their lives since October, assuring them the trial would end by Dec. How sad is that? I pity these jurors who are just carrying out their civic duties. Where do you even begin to try and put this trial back together? It's in shambles! And quite frankly, our faith in you to do the right thing has been shot to hell. The real victim in all of this has been brushed aside and forgotten. Give him the respect he so deserves.

Show some compassion for his siblings and family members. They are the victims that are being shunned right now. We stand united for the Alexander family and we will continue to be the voice for Travis until his voice is finally heard. No matter how long that takes!

To top it off allows secret testimony,what is going on with THAT?? Has she become ill and not Aware of her responsibilities? Since the first day Of this trail she has held only Eight 8 days of Court. I am glad I not a taxpayer in AZ. Or a juror. This trial has been a circus from the beginning, she needs to be over thrown!

Let a real judge in there to handle the Jodi Arias trial! The Alexander's have suffered enough. It is too painful to witness anymore. Hands off if I may, and let the attorneys try their cases. However, I think there should be limits and boundaries. It's clear that the defense team is doing everything in their power to avoid the death penalty but when they file a motion, the judge must address it and rule on it. Maybe she is letting them file all these motions until they are exhausted and nothing will come back on appeal.

Is she violating constitutional rights? Or is she just allowing the rights of the defense so this case does not get overturned or dismissed. I just can't believe they would allow her to continue presiding over this case if she was doing such a horrible job. If I were to rate her on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give her a 7. I just want justice for Travis and the Alexander family. Stephens is not even a1. I no longer refer to her as Judge, she has become an embarrassment to the State of Arizona..

This trial should have been over months ago, she has let this trial cost myself, and other tax payers of Arizona, millions of dollars with all the delays and no end in sight. Stephens as completely biased toward the defendant Jodi A. It is deplorable how she lets the defense team depict Mr. Alexander as a bad person. He was not and certainly did not deserve to die such a brutal and horrifing death at the hands of that monster Ms.

Please do not let this judge sentence Ms. Arias because she is ruling everything in Arias' favor and I feel she is hoping for a mistrial so she will give Arias' a lighter sentence.

Judge Stephens is making a mockery of the American judicial system. Arias is a very dangerous person and should be punished with LWOP for the rest of her awful life. Does anyone above her even care that Arizona has become the laughing stock of the United States Judicial system? This is now the 3rd witness testifying for the defense when the state has not even been given the opportunity to cross examine them! Plus, with this one, clearly not an 'expert' as claimed, since he does not even have a 'trained' background , has not even been questioned by the Prosecutor in advance of his testimony!

But he is allowed to go on the stand and claim to be an 'expert'? Why is she still allowed to preside over this mockery of a trial? We, the public, do not understand where the Justice is in this travesty of a train-wrecked trial.

Then, the Jurors, God bless them, are being held hostage by this Judge and defense team. They were told the trial would end by Dec. Should they be forced to serve indefinitely, for maybe another year? They nor the real victim's family are not being considered at all, ever, during this trial.

Where are the Superiors over Judge Sherry Stephens? Why can't you do something to put a competent Judge over these proceedings???

This phase of the trial reveals that Stephens is a terrible Judge and needs to be replaced. She is either totally over her head with this or she is completely biased for the defense. In the beginning I believed it was the former but the longer this circus continues, I believe it is the latter.

Shame on her superior s for allowing this to continue. Too much secrecy in a public trial between countless sidebars and secret testimony by a convicted murderer. Defense not producing evidence to prosecutor when instructed to do so and changing witnesses at the last minute without informing the court or prosecutor.

Defense putting and tax payers paying for a computer expert on the stand who turns out not to be an expert. And this is just a normal day in this Judges courtroom She needs some direction from someone much more learned and experienced than she.

Amazes me that the state of AZ actually pays her for this full blown circus that SHE and the defense team have created. I have never seen a judge allow such shenanigans to go on in a courtroom. She has let the defense attorneys and their witnesses be so disrespectful to the prosecuting attorney.

A judge is not suppose to be bias to either side and is suppose to make sure the attorneys are held accountable. We are suppose to have a open courtroom unless there is extenuating circumstances. This judge needs to learn how to control the courtroom. This case should have been over a long time ago and it would have been if judge Stephens controlled her court like judge Belvin Perry.

He is tough but fair and that is the way the justice system is suppose to work. At first, I thought Judge Stephens was being over cautious in allowing things into this trial in fear of being over-ruled in appeal process. We all know that this trial will continue into appeal regardless of penalty verdict.

Judge Stephens has allowed defense witnesses to chastise the prosecutor and ignore the yes or no questions and ignoring the "finger" and "throat slicking" antics of Jodi Arias during the first trial. Arias has already been found guilty of premeditated murder with cruelty.

The defense team seems to be dragging this penalty phase out in hopes of losing jurors and thus having to be called a mistrial. There has been so many days of trial suddenly being cancelled. There appears to be NO consideration for the jurors or the murdered victims families. And, I feel sure that Judge Stephens was aware prior to allowing Jodi Arias "the secret witness to testify" with closed court was totally inappropriate.

The "sidebars" Judge Stephens should have more control of her courtroom. Basically I find much that has been allowed to occur is a miscarriage of justice.

Both of these trials - guilty portion that Ms. Arias finally admitted to and this penalty trial has become a fiasco. Truly both of these trails have become an embarrassment to Arizona's and our nation's justice system.

Where is.. Arias has already been convicted so this trial for "mitigation" should have been over already. I can Not believe that Nothing has been done to either have this woman get her act together or be removed!

I honestly thing she should ge replaced by a judge with experience at DP cases! This was not the trial she should have been given as her first DP case! At first I said that it was because of her being careful because of an appeal! I can no longer allow myself to think this way anymore! She is in way over her head and someone needs to go and out this back in order! Juan knows more than her and she is just lost at this point! She would not allow cameras in the courtroom because of the defense? Well I think it was also so people could see what a horrible job she is doing and In my opinion she is ruining her career!!!!!! But the convicted murderer is happy with this fiasco and that seems to be fine with this judge! I think her reasoning may be that if she doesn't entertain all these motions, Arias' death would be on her hands!

Wrong thinking judge Stevens! Also get on with the trial. The jury deserves that. She is clearly Biased and in defense favor. She allows the Defense and a convicted Murderer run her court room.

She lies to the jury about no more delays, Trail over at a certain time all the while she does nothing but delays with no consideration for the victim, his Family, the tax payers of AZ and yes the Jury. She allows the Defense witnesses to lie under oath, disrespect the Prosecutor, in any form and shape they can, make a mockery of the trial and prosecutor.

It seems that this so called judge does not know the difference between a sentencing phase and a retrial. Sentencing phase should be done a long time ago but yet she allows the defense to yet again bash the victim, spread more lies as they go along, bring in more bogus evidence and start a whole new trial. This Judge is not smart enough to see how the murderer is playing the whole court system.
