How many fingers do i have

A thumb only has one joint and two phalanges. Anatomically, a thumb is unique. The position also sets the thumb apart. The thumb is out to the side of the hand and lower than the four fingers. So if a thumb is not really a finger, what is it? Thumb refers to the first digit of the human hand, set apart and opposable to the other four digits of the hand. Appendages like your fingers, toes, and thumbs are digits.

So humans usually have five digits per hand, one of which is the thumb. What about in practice? Do writers make the distinction between thumbs and fingers? Meanwhile, the original poster, who wished to be identified as Vicky, explained to Buzzfeed that her photo was staged as a joke — and she does indeed have five fingers after all. You don't normally refer to the thumb as a finger, but that doesn't mean it doesn't count. Hi, I think that we usually have 10 fingers. The thumb can be also referred to as a finger and I suppose that "thumb" is just more specific. It may not display this or other websites correctly. You should upgrade or use an alternative browser.

Rach Member London. It depends, most of the time in English we say ten fingers, and ten toes Aupick Senior Member Strasbourg, France. It sounds like one of those annoying trivia questions that come up in pub quizzes and the like: you answer ten because it's only logical, and then some smartass question master tells you that, actually, in fact, officially thumbs don't count as fingers.

As if anything's official in the English language. As if anyone has the right to legislate about a word that's been around since, hmmm, circa , according the OED. Power to the people, that's what I say! The OED, incidentally, mentions that there are five on each hand according to a general definition, and four in a restricted sense.

How diplomatic. And I don't want to hear any more about it.
