Both members wanted to do something that was not Thrash metal or Melodic death metal unlike the bands they played in. Under the name Cliff they recorded two demos in Studio Fredman that were never released. In the year the band came back from its break and went on to record a demo. After a third demo the band finally recorded and released their debut album entitled Passenger. Sten noted in February on their official website that they were in the process of recording their second album.

This did however not happen as Anders continued touring with In Flames until October when they entered their studio to record their next album. His sophomore album, Wide Eyes Blind Love , also released that year, reflected this change with a stripped-down acoustic sound. A year later, Passenger returned with the "fan-only" release Divers and Submarines. In , Rosenberg issued his fifth full-length effort as Passenger , All the Little Lights , which featured a more fully fleshed-out sound. While the album was released in the summer of , it wasn't until that the single "Let Her Go" broke through as a hit in Europe, eventually reaching number one in 16 countries, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Ireland, Italy, and Belgium.

Rosenberg had already begun work on his next album, Whispers , toward the end of and enlisted All the Little Lights co-producer Chris Vallejo to work with him.
